I’ve had some entertaining movie experiences this week. Especially for the first time watches. Let’s break it down with mini reviews of my 5 top watches.
5. Abominable (2006)
First off this film was not as old as I anticipated. I blind bought Abominable on Blu-ray based on the cover which created intrigue for me. I thought this would be a fun creature feature and that’s exactly what it is, nothing more nothing less. The yeti creature thing looked cool as hell. The main characters played their part, no one was particularly memorable. However they played their roles well and all performances were serviceable for a movie of this calibre. There’s some cool kills and the effects looked good. The man character is a wheelchair bound gentleman, who is trying to figure out what is happening in the community and he seems to have a very suspicious mind.

4. Lurking Fear (1994)
Full moon features brings H.P Lovecraft’s tale to life. With kick ass females and a quirky fun performance from Jeffrey Combs (From Beyond & Reanimator) as he stars as Dr. Haggis. Ashley Laurence (Hellraiser) is pretty tough and is always looking out for the doc. Something is coming deep from underground. It’s up to the doc, Cathryn and their entourage to ensure humanity prevails. The majority of the feature takes place in a eerie looking church and the surrounding graveyard. With a runtime of 77 minutes there no time wasted and a quick competently made movie is served up. Everyone involved does a stellar job with fun humour, scares and a British villain.

3. The Addiction (1995)
Christopher Walken stars in this story of a woman who is attacked and bitten on the rough streets of New York. After the bite she begins to change and has developed a new addiction, on for human blood. Drama/horror here done extremely well in an artistic manner by director Abel Ferrara. The film is black and white and has a few layers. The message is clear as blood is a metaphor for heroin. It’s a deep one so put your thinking cap on and enter the dark unforgiving streets of New York.

2. Deep Blue Sea (1999)
The new limited edition from Arrow video has made its way to my personal physical media collection. I must say revisiting this late 90’s video store favourite of mine was a total blast. Out in the ocean scientists have enlarged and enhanced god’s oldest killing machine’s brain. The result, an Aquatic invasion of the ocean set Aquatica research facility By smart ferocious sharks. It’s an action filled romp full of cliches and fun dialogue.

1. Blue Sunshine (1977)
This one has evaded me forever. I finally watched the strange LSD filled madness on 4K UHD. Jeff Lieberman had truly tapped into an interesting concept with Blue Sunshine. People who used the Blue sunshine substance at college are turning in to bald bug eyed killers. Why and how is the question. All is revealed in the masterfully woven 70’s film. I had waited a long time to view Blue Sunshine and it didn’t disappoint. It’s everything I anticipated from a bonkers 70’s outing.
