Let’s jump straight into this review. I’ll talk about the plot after.
The Stuff in 4K looked pretty much stunning! For the most part, yes Arrow knocks it out of the park again. With this crisp looking beautiful transfer, one scene in particular caught my eyes. That being the colourful supermarket scene in the early stages of the film. The colour pallet absolutely shone on the 4K format. The picture quality had a vibrant look to it and is certainly a visible improvement from their previous Blu-Ray release. The tub of “The Stuff” itself with it’s bright Pink wrapper and white logo looked gorgeous and felt like it could emerge from out of the screen and fall onto my lap. So overall I will recommend this 4K from Arrow. It boasts a really good picture quality and totally delivers.
The story revolves around the edible supposedly healthy treat The Stuff. Being pushed to the masses and heavily marketed The Stuff is becoming every Americans favourite gooey treat. However there’s something sinister behind it’s production. Why is it changing folk? And where does the soft white substance come from? It’s all up to Investigator and charming chap David “Mo” Rutherford to figure out The Stuff’s dangerous origins.
This was my second viewing of The Stuff. I’m happy to reveal that I enjoyed it more than my first watch years ago. Watching on 4K certainly enhanced my viewing experience and the film has gone up in my estimation. Yes it has a few dull moments however there’s fun to be had from crazy special effects to the comedic fight scenes. There is plenty of humorous dialogue and it’s clear Larry Cohen was going for a comedic tone in general but not to the extend of The Stuff being a full blown comedy. The characters are likeable and fun although I would have liked more scenes involving interactions between David & Chocolate Chip Charlie.
It’s a rather ridiculous movie and that is just fine. There’s gooey creature fun, action and a sense of genuine fun that radiates from the movie. The new Limited Edition 4K comes with an array of extras including a bonus Blu-Ray featuring the two hour extended cut. The slipcover has newly commissioned art which is one of Arrow’s finest pieces for a cover so far this year.
