THE SECT (1991) 4K Severin 3 Disk Limited Edition Review

Michele Soavi’s THE SECT is a dreamlike head trip. You could say its a scatter brained fever dream, loaded with brain burrowing bugs, a satanic cult and a giant bird of prey.

The opening sequence sets the tone when a group of hippies camping out in the desert are brutally butchered by a mysterious, sinister stranger and his accomplices. The film is littered with weird dream sequences and a whole lot of strangeness. Theres a memorable satanic ritual and a act where a huge giant bird of prey pecks at it’s victims neck until maggots fall out.

Recently Severin films put out three of Soavi’s classic horrors. THE SECT, THE CHURCH & Cemetery Man all in multiple disk limited editions. The sets even include each pictures original soundtrack on CD. Do note this isn’t a big boxset like Cemetery man. It’s a premium slipcover edition. The slipcover is high quality with amazing newly commissioned artwork and a shiny glossy Finnish. The set is stack, packed and loaded with special extras including a thick collectors booklet inside the 4K case.

The transfer is nice and a substantial upgrade from Blu-Ray editions available. Whilst not as impressive as the Cemetery Man 4K scan. Standard editions of the movie are also going to be available with the new artwork on the sleeve. Another standout 4K Michele Soavi outing from Severin. Heres hoping the label will put out Soavi’s stage show slasher STAGEFRIGHT.
