When it comes to Giallos The 1970s was the golden age and The Psychic is no exception. Directer Lucio Fulci (Zombie, The Beyond and Don’t Torture a Duckling) weaved a smooth looking film with a tight and engaging narrative. When you think the mystery is solved there is always a new revelation in The Psychic. The film is a well crafted murder mystery first and foremost therefor if you’re looking for Mr. Fulci’s signature gore then you may be disappointed. Don’t let that stop you from seeing this amazing piece of seventies Italian cinema. The new 4K set from Severin of course is the best the film has ever looked despite the Scorpion releasing Blu-Ray being fantastic and more than adequate. This four disk limited edition is stacked and full of extras including a 32 page booklet and the film’s original soundtrack on CD. As a fan of the movie and Fulci I couldn’t have asked for a more comprehensive release.
As you’re probably aware 4K UHD disks are region free and can be played on any 4K compatible machine. A slight issue if you are importing this release is the two Blu-Rays are region A locked. Meaning you will require a player that has all region Blu-Ray disk playback compatibilities. This is quite essential for the release as the majority of special features are on the Blu-rays. Disk one is the region free 4K UHD with the feature film solely. I state this because this disk has no extras on it. So in order to dive deep into the Psychic’s features you are going to need a region free Blu-Ray player or a Region A unit. The accompanying this booklet is also very knowledgable and filled with essays and production information with nice photographs from the film scattered throughout.
Synopsis
In 1959, a woman in Dover kills herself by leaping from a cliff; at the same time, her daughter, Virginia, living in Florence, witnesses the death in a vision. Eighteen years later, an adult Virginia (Jennifer O’Neill) has married a rich Italian businessman Francesco Ducci (Gianni Garko). After Francesco leaves on a business trip, Virginia experiences new visions consisting of seemingly unrelated people and objects, including a murdered old woman. Virginia plans to renovate an abandoned mansion owned by her husband but realises that it resembles a building she has seen in her visions. After noticing a crack in the plaster, she hacks a hole into the wall of a room, finding a skeleton inside it. Assuming the skeleton is that of the dead woman, Virginia contacts the police. However, they do not believe her story and charge Francesco with the killing. (Plot synopsis credited to Wikipedia, yes I copied and pasted it.)
4K UHD transfer
Many have said this before and it is so true. Old seventies, eighties and nineties movies look phenomenal on the 4K transfers with exceptions for certain films depending on the film elements and effort and love that is put into the restoration. I won’t beat around the bush, quite simply this transfer is lovely and is very easy on the eyes. A worthwhile upgrade in my opinion. Its clean and crisp looking for a 1977 film. It’s not the most mind blowing transfer to ever hit the format still I think it’s awesome and I have no issues with it. The sound is also good and adequate. The film has English and Italian mono tracks.
Final thoughts
Of course one day there will more than likely be different editions released in other regional territories. As it stands this Limited Edition from American label Severin films is the definitive release of The psychic so I highly recommend purchasing if you have the funds and interest. Yep, if you like the film or are a Lucio Fulci fan and film collector I can safely and happily say this is a must own release for any giallo die hard and lovers of classic Italian cinema.
