THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU (1996) Scream Factory Blu-Ray Review

The new Blu-ray, boasting a brand new 2K scan, exceeded my expectations greatly. I knew going in that this release would be a certain quality, however the transfer literally blew me away, especially considering that this is a Blu-Ray disk not 4K UHD. The picture quality is bright vibrant and second to none. Some 4Ks don’t look this good. The wildlife on the island of Moreau look glorious, the greens pop and all I have to say is I personally haven’t seen a Blu-Ray look this good in a short while. Congratulations on the transfer Scream Factory.

Based on H.G Well’s novel and the story’s third adaptation, The Island Of Dr. Moreau deals with the idea of control and self loathing. The main plot revolves around Moreau (Marlon Brando) who is electric in the role. Moreau has been experimenting on the island fusing human DNA with animal DNA. The result is an unstable cross species. Val Kilmer puts in a fantastic performance also. The film is action packed and a far cry in difference from the classic original adaptation The Island Of Lost souls (1933) which is a solid enough movie. This adaptation of H.G Well’s works however is a whole different animal. It’s violent and action packed. The story is engaging but I did feel things got bogged down in the middle. Thankfully the movie picks up steam in the final act leading to a violent clash between the good and the bad.

Overall an awesome release from Scream Factory, although perhaps a little too pricey. The newly commissioned artwork looks very good. The disk is lacking on features. It does have reversible cover art featuring the original movie poster artwork. This disk is the ultimate edition for this lost 90’s caper. The transfer is absolutely stunning.
