The Bunny Game (2011) Review

The Bunny Game was not as graphically violent as I expected. It was however mean spirited, bleak & an onslaught of human torment. In this review I’ll share a few quick thoughts and my reaction to a fairly disturbing film that is still banned in the UK. I preordered the new U.S (region free) release from film treasures. Beforehand I kind of knew roughly what I was getting myself into. I did anticipate more physical violence and I thought the movie would have more of a cat & mouse chase element. The film is black & white, this really enhances the nightmare visuals, helping set the tone.

The narrative, whilst simple is impactful! With barely any dialogue the viewer relies on imagery to fill in the gaps and maintain a grasp on what’s going on in the picture. A down and out prostitute, who is clearly depressed and sick of living this way of life, meets a trucker, who she assumes will dump their load leaving her to buy more substances and carry on in the loop of despair that is the woman’s life. Little does she know, the trucker is a dominating insane control freak. His M.O. is kidnapping ladies of the night and subjecting them to mental & sexual torment & torture for his in gratification.

The prostitute, once kidnapped, is chained up almost nude as if she was an animal. The man subjects her to degrading torment and there’s moments where she is on a lead and walked through the desert as if she is a dog. The opening scene shows a flashback of a gross forceful blow job. Yes, you even see the guy’s package unfortunately. The film is filled with imagery that cuts deep and lingers after the credits roll. I do think this film being banned in the UK is over the top but I get it as there really is some unpleasant and unsettling moments throughout it’s duration.
