Abel Ferrara’s black and white metaphor for drug addiction is a solid and more grounded take on the vampire genre.
The urban location of Manhattan NY presents a modern 90s vibe. If you didn’t know, Ferrara shot on location, so the film reflects that era of the city. I also noticed Russel Simmons’ name on the opening credits, so that explains the use of classic hip-hop in the movie. To my delight the Cypress Hill hit “I wanna get high” is featured. Christopher Walken also stars in the film.
The narrative tells the story of Kathleen Conklin a university student with an inquisitive mind. One dark night in Manhattan she is followed by a women then forced down a staircase leading to a dark alleyway. She is then bitten and left in a state of shock as she tries to comprehend what has just happened to her and why. The movie mainly focuses on Kathleen’s transition & transformation into a creature of the night. Her hunger and lust for blood is ever increasing, she is changing daily and so will need to act on her impulses.
The new 4K from Arrow was nice and sharp, no complaints from me there. The new disk comes equipped with an array of special features, a booklet and slipcover. The sleeve and slip features the newly commissioned artwork. The inner sleeve is reversible and also features the original theatrical poster.
