Heads are gonna roll, spinach will be devoured, but no one gets a fist through their head. I recently kicked back and watched the latest family favourite to recieve a horror facelift. Since Winnie The Pooh Blood & Honey, any marketable entertainment property to hit the public domain has undergone its horrification. From the Grinch and, just this week, Mickey Mouse with comedy horror, Screamboat. There’s even another different scary Popeye movie coming out soon. Anyway, we are here for Popeye The Slayer man. Sounds awful right? Well it’s exactly what you would anticipate.
The premise is serviceable and also predictable. An abandoned spinach factory is haunted by the ghost of The sailor man according to locals. Behind the factory’s closure is a scandal involving contaminated spinach. A group of friends head to the spooky factory to uncover the truth behind the legend of Popeye. What they uncover is a cover up that took place many years ago. They had also better beware because they are in the sailor man’s lair and he will scalp them and remove all their hair.
The film is overall badly acted but this I can forgive given the ridiculousness of the fun premise. The main cast are good enough, it’s some side characters that the actors’ abilities show to be a little rough. Still it’s a silly film with a crazy plot so I don’t mind bad acting as it adds to the fun aspect for a movie such as this. There’s some awesome gore pieces such as a particular nasty scalping. Popeye also smokes his trademark pipe, the plot uses this as a sign that he is near. The film uses the classic cartoon’s lore to good effect and the result is a predictable yet fun slasher. Popeye himself looked badass and suits being an ass kicking machine.
Movie Score: 3/5
