I can’t comprehend that I have never encountered this movie in the wild before. This 4K release is the first I have ever heard of Mirror Mirror. I didn’t set my hopes too high and I was shocked at how good this movie turned out to be. It’s the type of horror story you can just chill with. The score is very early 90s as is the whole aesthetic. The characters are interesting enough and the acting is good. The theme of the film is dark and has a prominent witchy vibe although barely featuring any witchcraft. It’s about a teenager Megan who moves to a new town with her mother Susan Gordon played by Karen Black (Trilogy Of Terror, House of 1000 Corpses and Burnt Offerings).
When being shown around their new home. Megan insists on keeping an old antique mirror. That was left by the previous occupants. Little does she know. The mirror is cursed and harbours an old evil deep from within. There’s some really great creepy horror in Mirror Mirror. The scene where Megan’s Dad’s spirit emerges from the mirror is a particularly memorable scene. As the movie progresses Megan develops powers & abilities curtsy of the dark mirror. Watch out bullies and anyone who crosses her. There’s even a dialogue reference to Carrie although both are completely different movies overall and feel very different. Although I can see the connotations between the two where the bullying is concerned.
This is a brilliant 90’s horror movie and I’m so glad I spontaneously picked up the 4K disk. The 4K transfer looked very nice to me. Take into account this is the first time I have watched Mirror Mirror and therefor the only format I have viewed it on. This one is highly recommended.
Movie Score 4/5
