After last September’s groundbreaking region A territory 4K release of Friday The 13th (2009) courtesy of Arrow Video, it’s now time to machete slash our way through more of the New Line Cinema cannon. I’m assuming we will get Freddy Vs Jason at a later date from Arrow. I have recently viewed both new 4K editions, Jason Goes To Hell & Jason X. I did say I would never move past the 2020 Scream Factory complete Deluxe Edition Blu-Ray set, however I could not resist two of the franchise’s most polarising and dynamic entries in 4K. Yes the amazing new cover art got me.
Jason Goes To Hell
A stunning new transfer of the weird body-hopping Friday The 13th movie from 1993. Billed as the final Friday movie, obvious BS as the unforgettable finale of the film features Freddy Krueger’s knifed glove pulling Jason’s iconic hockey mask into the depths of the underworld, which looked superb in ultra high definition by the way. From the word go the new transfer shines from colour depth to detail. The movie is bad in some regard but kind of saved by it’s over the top kill sequences. This new release has won me over slightly as I use to dislike this entry with a passion. Now every time I watch the movie, it creeps up in rating on my Letterboxd. If you can get your head around the fact that Jason in his brooding typical form is barely featured in the picture. There’s a fun outing to be had with memorable characters such as duke, a hot sex tent scene and crazy nasty gore.
Jason X
Jason and his latest victim are frozen, resulting in a slasher movie of galactic proportions. Set predominantly on a futuristic spaceship with an assortment of victims for the slay. Jason even gets an uber upgrade due to futuristic technology. The frozen face kill especially looked magnificent in glorious 4K. The whole transfer like Jason Goes To Hell is crisp & clean giving the 2001 space slasher the uber treatment.
Final thoughts
Both editions are stacked with an array of special features. The Fantastic new artwork is uniformed and totally looks the business. The slipcovers are limited so bare that mind. Jason Goes To Hell is a two disk UHD set with the theatrical cut and the unrated cut. Overall these are a day one purchase for hardcore fans of perhaps the greatest horror franchise of all time. I personally thought Jason goes To Hell was the bigger upgrade from Blu-Ray but that could simply be my eyes. Both upgrades are top tier.
