Enter the Ultra Violent

I recently saw Martyrs (2008) for the first time and whilst having a strong story and interesting characters. I still found some graphic scenes unnerving as a viewer. For this short article I’ll recommend five Ultra violent movies from my 4K/ Blu-Ray collection.

5. Anti-Christ (2009)

Directed by Lara Von Trier and starring Willem Defoe & Charlotte Gainbourg as a married couple attempting to find peace after the accidental death of their baby. When things breakdown, there’s some truly horrifying scenes including genital mutilation. One scene in particular is unbearable.

4. August Underground (2001)

This revolting movie pushes the boundaries of disgusting on screen torture to new heights. It’s found footage which adds to the film’s realism. The torture endured by the victims of the sadistic main duo is horrendous. I won’t even describe some of their antics. Think deep wounds and faeces. I don’t think I have the stomach for the sequels which will open the envelope of sickening violence further.

3. Cannibal Holocaust (1980)

Cannibal Holocaust is a tremendous cannibal film. The majority of it’s duration is made up of a mockumentary style look into a documentary filmmaker’s footage of the unfortunate fate their crew meets. Deep in the Amazon the crew searches for a distant uncivilised cannibalistic tribe. The film is notorious for its depiction of animal cruelty. With some truly shocking scenes and violence. This one requires an iron stomach.

2. Headless (2015)

This retro slasher designed to look like a lost 70’s gorefest is nasty and filled with bloody & gross sequences. There’s many moments of brutal slayings and ultra violence. However the movie still has it’s narrative depth. Especially when the skull head killer’s upbringing and past is explored. The scene where the killer lures a victim down a dark dingy alley after meowing like a kitty is pure nightmare fuel.

1. Martyrs (2008)

I’m not overly familiar with the French extreme genre. Martyrs is a deeply unsettling and disturbing film. It’s well made with an intricate story focussing on the idea of reaching martyrdom. The realistic brutality is off the wall and uncomfortable to watch. It’s a depressing watch and requires a cheerful pallet cleanser after. It’s dark exhausting stuff.
