No score, No mercy Megan is missing (2011)

Megan is missing, an unsettling, disturbing, downbeat found footage gem that lingers long after the credits roll. I have to admit even yours truly was slightly disturbed afterwards. It’s one that sticks in your mind, apparently it’s banned in New Zealand and doesn’t have a release on physical media in many territories. I managed to score the region A U.S. Blu-ray.

Internet related horror can be hit or miss. Megan is Missing goes straight for the jugular. Especially during the final twenty minutes. Our main characters are two young girls, Megan & Amy. Megan is popular and a straight A student, Amy however is less confident whilst still being genuine, loyal and sweet. For the first 45 minutes their friendship is captured through their own webcam chats and personal video diaries.

The film builds a calm environment to begin with resulting in the third acts events being a huge blow to the head. One particular scene early on is a slick sympathy builder from the director. The scene shows Megan talking about her mistreatment as a child and the abuse she suffered, tears in her eyes and clearly suffering a moment of sadness as Amy films then comforts her.

When Megan goes missing is the point of no return and the seals Amy’s fate. Amy is lost, trapped in a loop of despair. Where is her best friend? Nobody knows and Amy cannot even rely on Megan’s other friends as they deem her as a tag along and the reason why Megan is missing. Then boom a figure in the woods grabs Amy from behind and she is never heard from again. Unfortunately for us we witness shocking footage straight out of a nihilistic nightmare.

Megan is missing appears as another missable found footage outing on the surface to begin with. That soon dissolved as I became hooked with the rawness and realism of the film. Granted the acting isn’t perfect which isn’t a problem because it adds to the realness of this heartbreaking harrowing horror. Megan is missing has layers and if you stick with it, you will witness one of the most impactful found footage films out there.

No Score, no polish just two girl’s very real Hell. When things get downright sinister, you’ll feel wrong for watching. It feels that raw & real. More movie fans should see this disturbing gem which has been buried for far too long underneath its releasing restrictions.
