I threw up a small pizza Friday night. Yucky stuff! I have felt under the weather all week which is not good. On the plus side I have needed rest which has given me the opportunity to consume lots of movies. From discovering two more 90’s gems to rewatching a classic Giallo in 4k. Let’s say it’s been an adventurous week for my movie pallet.
5. BASEketball (1998) watched via streaming
Trey Parker movies have a dose of my kind of humour. That being I’m a fan of South Park and normally enjoy most episodes of the show. It’s not as hot as it was but still delivers on laughs and a funny story. I wasn’t looking forward to BASEketball when my friend announced he had downloaded it and we were going to stream it. It was one of two Trey movies I hadn’t seen. The other is Orgasmo. I wasn’t in the mood for a sports comedy but I have to say it was a laugh. Trey and Matt’s humour style is all over the movie. They create a new sport involving verbally berating the opposite team in an attempt to distract them. These scenes were hilarious. It’s all very 90’s and that what I liked about it. The humour today on average is tamer so the comedy featured felt refreshing in a nostalgic way.
Movie Score: 3/5
4. Landline Goes Click (2015) rewatched via streaming on Amazon Prime Video
Plenty of tension in this mostly contained in one environment thriller. I’ll have to be carful not to spoil as there is some plot twists. Imagine being tricked into being stuck on a landmine? All over one stupid mistake. Your best friend’s girlfriend is the only one trying to help you as your boat stuck in the middle of nowhere. I forgot this one had some very uncomfortable scenes including rape and panty sniffing. The finale of the film is as intense as it comes.
Movie Score 3.5/5
3. Don’t Torture A Duckling (1972) Watched on 4K disk
On Thursday I received a copy of the upcoming 4k release from Arrow video. This Italian Giallo from the godfather of gore Lucio of Fulci is one of his best made films. A small village in Italy is plagued with a series of child murders. With many suspects, it’s left to an investigator and the local police to find who is responsible. The new 4K elevated this classic for me. The film is just simply a joy to revisit. It’s not Fulci’s goriest offering but does have some nasty grisly death scenes.
Movie Score: 4/5
2. Rumpelstiltskin (1995) watched on 4k disk
This has to be last weeks most anticipated first time viewing for me. A beautiful physical media edition from the brilliant Terror Vision. With a solid 4k restoration to go with the lovely set. This was a simple and fun movie watch. Rumpelstiltskin has returned from a 1000 year banishment. He needs a baby because he needs a soul. Watching Rumpelstiltskin dance was freaky fun. Imagine a dance off with M3gan. There’s a shootout in a police station. Our hero Rumpelstiltskin even gets behind the wheel of a huge tanker during an intense chase scene.
Movie Score 3.5/5
1. Mirror Mirror (1990) Watched on 4K disk
Watch of the week for sure. I was expecting this movie to be entertaining. Mirror Mirror completely rose above my expectations. Karen Black as the mother was weird and brought some oomph to the character. The rest of the cast were highly watchable and the creepy moments delivered. There’s some nasty bits in Mirror Mirror including a stream of blood trickling down the cursed mirror. There’s a more detailed review of the 4K in the review section of Skincrawlers.co.uk.
Movie Score: 4/5
With the In Search Of Darkness early 90’s documentary on the way and some fun as hell 90’s discoveries from this week. I am feeling an overwhelming urge to discover more indie horror gems from this decade. Stop by next week for another countdown of my favourite watches from the previous week.
